Fu issata per la prima volta nel 1850 a Cįrdenas, cittą della provincia di Matanzas, quando un gruppo di rivoltosi prese le armi contro il potere coloniale spagnolo.
Le tre strisce azzurre simboleggiavano i dipartimenti in cui era suddivisa l'isola e le due bianche la purezza dello spirito indipendentista del popolo.
Il triangolo equilatero rappresentava la libertą, l'uguaglianza e la fraternitą e il colore rosso il sangue che si sarebbe dovuto versare per raggiungere l'indipendenza.
La stella, bianca e solitaria, č l'emblema della libertą assoluta.
